Anyone looking for critical illness cover should speak to a broker, rather than seeking out a policy on their own, an expert believes.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for the British Insurance Broker's Association, said: "Speak to an insurance broker who can give you the right advice on the right policy for you."
He added that a broker would be able to provide advice on what people need to disclose when applying for critical illness cover.
Mr Trudgill said that providing insurers with the information they asked for was vital when filling in a critical illness insurance application form.
The Association of British Insurers recently revealed guidelines which it said would ensure that more payouts were made on policies such as critical illness cover, payment protection and life insurance .
However, it said that the new rules would not give lead to a payout if the insurance company found that a customer had deliberately withheld information.
