Car insurance customers have been warned that January 2nd is the busiest day for breakdowns on Britain's roads.
According to Britannia Rescue, drivers are 63 per cent more likely than average to break down when they return to work after the festive season.
Andrew Beard of Britannia Rescue said that a "difficult journey" could be on the cards for car insurance customers and other road users on this day.
He said: "As well as the possibility of poor weather conditions and heavy traffic, there is the added risk of cars failing to start or breaking down as many more cars than usual will have been idle over the Christmas period."
But motorists could take precautions by ensuring their vehicles undergo its "usual checks and services", said Mr Beard, adding that cars should be taken for a "short spin" at least once during the festive season.
However, if the worst does happen, having car breakdown cover as part of car insurance "will alleviate some of the stress", he added.
According to Mr Beard, drivers should consider adding the housecall option to their car insurance policy as many incidents arise from cars failing to start.
A report in the Mail on Sunday this week warned that motorists without car insurance adds some £30 a year to the premium paid by those who have car insurance.
