People signing up for products such as critical illness cover and private medical insurance tend look at the cost, rather then the small print when making a decision, one expert has said.
Jack Cassidy, director of independent financial advisors Ashley Law, said: "People tend to look at the top line and not the small print and, if you take critical illness cover as an example, some critical illness cover will have fewer benefits than others, but obviously the premiums are also less."
He added that the same applied to private health insurance .
He said that when looking at a critical illness or health insurance quote people tended to ignore the small print and "go for the cheapest option".
On Thursday the Association of British Insurers announced new guidelines which it says should mean insurers will pay more claims for critical illness and life insurance policies .
The association says that "the industry wants customers to be able to take out insurance with confidence".
