Pet insurance is a good idea but "it is very important" to choose the right policy, one expert says.
Ricky Thomas, managing director of Petmeds.co.uk, said: "The most important thing is that there are brands [of pet insurance] out there that say they will pay for the life of the treatment.
"But there are probably 90 per cent of [policies] which have a very low cap limit on a condition and sometimes it's not even per year."
He added: "There are certain things that have to be done . and those things can cost a fortune."
Recent research from Petmeds.co.uk found that vet's fees and the rising cost of animal medication have meant that owning a pet is now more expensive than ever before.
It said that the average cost of owning a pet has risen by around seven per cent between November 2006 and December 2007.
