Accidents by sat nav users may mean higher car insurance costs

Tue, 22 Jul 2008

By blindly following satellite navigation directions, UK drivers are ending up going down unsuitable rural roads and increasing the risk of having an accident because drivers drive too fast.

New research by NFU Mutual found that drivers followed the directions even though they knew the road wasn’t suitable. The result could mean higher car insurance premiums for motorists.

Ian Jewitt of NFU Mutual said, "The survey shows that there is still an alarming lack of knowledge about the hazards of rural roads.

"It's particularly worrying that a quarter of sat nav users continue to follow the gadget's instructions even when their eyes tell them they are heading up a farm track. This may account for some of the reports of vehicles stuck in fields and deep fords."
