Health insurance warning for expats

Wed, 23 Jul 2008

People who emigrate need to make sure they are familiar with the healthcare system of their country of residence and have adequate medical insurance in place rather than relying on the NHS .

The warning comes from Shelter Offshore who say that popular emigration destinations such as Cyprus and turkey have good health alternatives should anyone need treatment while living abroad.

Rhiannon Davies said, "If you move to live abroad and cut all ties with the UK, don't automatically assume you can always fall back on the good old NHS. Checking with the likes of SAGA and the British Embassy in the given nation to get their advice is the best thing to do.''

Currently retired Britons are entitled to free healthcare even if they don’t live in the country, however anyone under the pension age or unemployed do not receive the benefit.
