The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned homeowners to check they have adequate home insurance protection after the recent flooding in the West Country indicated what may be the beginning of another wet summer in Britain.
Homeowners that have suffered as a result of the latest flash floods are being reassured by the association that all household and business insurance policies will cover flood damage and many offer 24-hour emergency helpline services to arrange for essential repairs.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI, said: "These events highlight just how important insurance protection is. If you have been affected by flooding, contact your insurance company. Their priority is to deal with all claims as quickly as possible."
After the floods last summer insurance companies dealt with an estimated 180,000 claims, at a total cost in excess of £3 billion. Last year, the government promised to embark on a thorough and extensive flood risk assessment of Britain and improve the development of flood maps. It also pledged to improve flood defences and improve drainage systems.
