Beware of summer crime says Tesco insurance

Thu, 27 Mar 2008

With summer approaching, Tesco home insurance is warning people to check their gardens and make sure they are completely burglar-proof . The insurer spoke to Mick Kelly, manager of neighbourhoodwatch.net who calls this time of year British Summer Crime. Revealing that more than half of all break-ins occur from the back of the house, he is advising people to check the state of their garden fences after the onslaught of the winter gales.

To ensure that gardens are secure, Tesco has come up with some handy hints, which include planting prickly plants like roses and holly under window sills to prevent easy access. The insurer also suggests making fences and walls difficult to climb by adding loose trellises and installing security lighting .

Allan Burns, head of Tesco home insurance, said: "Now is a good time to raise awareness of how to improve home security by using the environment outside your home."
