CCTV installation does not mean cheaper insurance

Thu, 20 Mar 2008

Having a CCTV camera installed on a property does not necessarily give lower insurance premiums, say Norwich Union .

Considered a niche product in the domestic market, there is a high demand for CCTV. The electrical retailer, Maplin, has seen a 70 per cent increase in its sales of security cameras for domestic use over the past year.

There are over 90 different security cameras and CCTV kits available. A popular choice is a camera that allows remote monitoring via the internet .

According to Alison Palmer, a household underwriting consultant with Norwich Union, there is insufficient evidence as to whether CCTV systems actually deter criminals. Therefore, when calculating insurance premiums, the insurer does not take CCTV into account.

Norwich Union recommend fitting a burglar alarm and locks that have been pre-approved by the insurer . Also, a small discount is available to those who are active members of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
