The cost of treating an injured pet could be as much as £9,000 if the owner does not have pet insurance, it has been claimed.
According to Saga Pet Insurance, the massive bill could potentially be incurred if a dog has to be treated for ligament damage .
The firm also said that the average cost for treating a cat involved in a traffic accident is £705 but can be as much as £5,000, putting a big dent in the finances of those without pet insurance.
Research conducted by the company found that one in seven pet insurance claims is the result of an accident, rather than the pet falling ill.
The study found that cats in the Midlands are most clumsy, with feline accidents in the area accounting for 26 per cent of pet insurance claims .
Last month, Jenny Davies of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals said it is important that pet owners take out pet insurance to cover the cost of unexpected vet's fees.
