People driving to festivals should inform their insurer

Wed, 19 Mar 2008

Industry experts have warned people planning on driving to festivals with their friends to tell their insurance company before they plan to go.

Drivers should alert their car insurance company to the possibility of another person driving their vehicle, even if they have their own comprehensive insurance, said Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for the RAC .

Mr Nelson explained that drivers will usually find it easy and relatively cheap to add people on to an insurance policy and give themselves some added security .

"If a person wanted to drive a friend’s car and were insured fully comprehensively on their own vehicle they would be third party only on their friend's car," he added.

"There is a lot of misunderstanding about this. If your friend crashes your car, say he puts it into a tree, you are going to face 100 per cent of the bill."

Tesco Personal Finance have recently asked the government to scrap the insurance premium tax on green cars, which will make them cheaper to insure and more attractive to consumers.
