A new government plan which encourages people to continue improving their driving skills throughout their lives could save newly qualified drivers up to £500 on their car insurance .
The courses will be available to all drivers but young motorists, who currently pay premiums of up to £2,000 a year, will benefit most from the insurance savings .
The insurance industry has said it is willing to offer to reduce premiums by around 25% for drivers who complete the courses. The courses will be developed and approved by the Driving Standards Agency and among the skills to be included in the course are likely to be motorway driving and emergency braking at high speed.
Over half a million people gain driving licences each year, but less than 10,000 follow-up with the advanced driving test. A Department for Transport source said: "We want people to go on improving their driving skills throughout their driving careers . This is about creating the right sort of education and incentivising people to do it."
