Independent travellers should make sure that they have the correct insurance policy in place for their holiday, one expert has warned.
Edward Dutton, personal insurance director for Axa, explained that people who book their own holidays might not be covered by their travel insurance for events such as flight cancellations .
He said: "We are aware from our own claims area that independent travellers have run into problems with their travel insurance and a recent report from Defaqto underlined the need for insurers to offer cover that helps customers when things go wrong."
Such things would be covered by the tour operator or travel agent if people were booking a package holiday, Mr Dutton added.
Axa is now offering independent holidaymakers a travel insurance policy that covers such events, he concluded.
Meanwhile, the UK card payments agency Apcas has warned holidaymakers to shield their Pin when using their debit or credit card while abroad.
