Home insurer warns Christmas shoppers against buying in-store cover

Mon, 10 Nov 2008

As Christmas shoppers make purchases over the festive period, Esure home insurance is warning against wasting money on unnecessary in-store cover.

The insurer says that Brits could waste thousands of pounds buying in-store insurance that they already have. According to new research by Esure home insurance, 23 per cent of British shoppers will buy additional insurance to cover a purchase of a mobile phone, watch or item of jewellery from the retailer.

However, over 3.3 million adults will already have such cover in their home insurance policy . Esure is advising shoppers to check their insurance before purchasing anything as most home insurance policies cover the entire household and this includes children living away while at university . Shoppers are also advised to examine the retailer's policy document before agreeing to it.

Recently, Esure warned skiers not to try to save money by abandoning their travel insurance . Head of travel insurance, Mike Pickard, warned: " Winter sports have a degree of risk and being covered on case of an accident is crucial."
