Pet insurer finds animals in Britain are turning vegetarian

Wed, 12 Nov 2008

According to a new report from pet insurer LV=, health concerns are resulting in pet owners changing their pets' diets and swapping meat for vegetables and fruit.

Research from LV= has revealed that 40 per cent of pet owners give their pets up to three portions of fruit and veg daily and that there are now 145,000 cats and dogs in Britain are on a vegetarian diet .

Health-conscious owners say they have seen a range of improvements from their veggie-eating pets including fewer health problems, glossier coats, a better digestion and loss of weight . Emma Holyer, Spokesperson for LV=, said: "This research shows there are thousands of cats and dogs consuming vegetables in their diets without any problems. In fact, these diets are well known for relieving arthritis, skin and fur problems and obesity in dogs ."

However, Ms Holyer added that before putting their pets on a vegetable only diet, pet owners should check with their vet . Cats cannot survive on a vegetarian diet and need specialist supplements and although dogs can survive, a sudden change in diet may cause problems.
