The price comparison website Confused.com is offering advice to homeowners to help them avoid the "potential minefield" of winter insurance claims .
The site explains how to cut down the risk of having to make an insurance claim as winter approaches. People are advised to run safety checks on devices such as electric fires, electric blankets and blow heaters, since they will not have been used for a long time. Cracked fuses, dust and frayed leads should all be examined.
Also, boilers that have not been used for months should be serviced as extremes of hot and cold can be the cause of malfunction or explosion. In addition, fireguards should be put in front of log fires and chimneys need to be cleaned properly.
Recently, research from Confused.com found that Britons are losing as much as £1.4 billion a year by not researching their home insurance options thoroughly. Most people simply accept their provider's renewal quote or do not bother to shop around.
