Figures newly released by police, which refer to the number of uninsured motorists caught driving, have been described by the AA as "good news".
Forces around the country collectively clocked over 170,000 offending drivers in 2008, compared with only 78,000 in 2006.
Director of AA Insurance, Simon Douglas explained that this is due to the success of the new automatic number plate registration systems on police cars which scan a vehicle and then match it up to the Motor Insurers Database to see whether it is insured.
Mr Douglas said: "Accidents caused by uninsured drivers cost over £500 million per year. This is met by the insurance industry, which adds an average of nearly £30 to the annual premium of every honest motorist."
A survey conducted by AA Driving School found when parents teach their children to drive, it is likely that driving habits will be passed through the generations.
