Holidaymakers should hunt for good travel insurance

Thu, 25 Jun 2009

Those looking for a decent level of delayed departure cover with their travel insurance will have to shop around because quality of protection varies greatly, according to Gocompare.com.

AIG Direct's Platinum travel insurance offers delayed departure cover of up to £500 per person, but holidaymakers have to be stuck in the terminal for 25 days in order to be able to claim this amount.

However, the Silver travel insurance package from the same firm offers no delayed departure cover at all.

Gocompare.com identified American Express as a good provider of travel insurance when it comes to delayed departure cover, where customers can claim £20 per person for six hours' wait.

Hayley Parsons, chief executive of the website, said: "It's unlikely many holiday makers would wait for more than two or three days before abandoning their holiday so policies offering larger payments more quickly are more useful than those with simply the highest maximum cover."

Those rushing abroad on holiday this summer can now book travel insurance within minutes by using a new internet and telephone service from Rias .
