Homeowners urged to take out personal belongings cover before going on holiday

Mon, 15 Jun 2009

Cheshire Building Society is advising people who are travelling this summer to ensure that personal belongings are covered in case of loss or theft.

According to the building society, many homeowners assume they are automatically covered should their homes be broken into and their belongings stolen while they are away, however checking the small print to ensure this is essential.

Karen Torson, product manager at the organisation, said: "Adding personal belongings cover to a home insurance policy could avoid disappointment if a customer is burgled and finds their insurance does not cover this. Also, even though personal belongings cover comes at an extra cost, customers will not need baggage insurance before going on holiday as this is incorporated in the policy."

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA), insurance policies such as home and motor cover are crucial and people should not cut back on these during the recession .
