The football season may be over but fans have been warned that when the season starts again in August, listening to their favourite team compete over the radio while they are driving could lead them to crash their vehicle . This could result in injuries and raise their car insurance premiums.
A study commissioned by esure and undertaken by the University of Leicester, revealed that individuals in a simulator who listened to football games had a greater tendency to speed, overtake and tailgate other cars .
As part of the research, 12 motorists were monitored while listening to football matches and it was discovered that their behaviour fluctuated according to key points in the games.
Professor Michael J Pont from the university explained: "It is widely accepted the distraction of talking on a mobile phone may lead to accidents, but other activities may have a similar impact. Football fans should ask someone else to drive during important games."
