Motorists using cars to store valuables urged to check home insurance

Thu, 04 Jun 2009

British motorists are increasingly using their cars as storage extensions of their homes, according to research from Confused.com.

Around 7 million people could be storing over £200 worth of items in their cars and nearly 3 million items worth over £400. Many of these people don’t have the space in their homes and so they start using their car to store objects such as sat navs, books, glasses and expensive sports equipment, including golf clubs .

Will Thomas, Head of motor insurance at Confused.com, said: "Should any items be stolen from cars, it is better to claim on home contents insurance as car insurance only typically covers belongings up to the value of £250. Although, homeowners will need to ensure they have added this option, personal items away from home, to their policy."

Mr Thomas added that all insurance policies should be carefully checked to ensure that adequate cover is in place.
