According to a new survey, one in five motorists in the UK have at some stage driven a car that they were not insured to drive.
The poll, conducted by moneysupermarket.com, found that nine per cent of people have driven their own car when they were not covered by up-to-date car insurance . Further, eight per cent of drivers have admitted to driving someone else's car without proper insurance .
Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, commented that the figures also revealed a worrying trend as they are worse than the statistics from last year. He said: "Driving without insurance, no matter how far the distance, is against the law . Anyone caught doing so could face hefty penalties which include a £200 on-the-spot fine and six points on their licence ."
Recently, the AA have conducted research and found that insurers may be offering car insurance at a lower price at the present time, in an attempt to win a larger share of the renewals market.
