Contents insurance may cover culinary mishaps in the home

Wed, 13 May 2009

As a result of the recession, almost half of Brits are now choosing to stay at home with a takeaway, or try some celebrity TV chef inspired home cooking, rather than go and eat out at a restaurant, reveals new research by AA insurance .

Supermarkets are cashing in on this stay at home culture and are offering food and wine at a fraction of restaurant prices. For example Sainsburys have a meal deal for £5 and there is a Tesco wine festival saving of up to 50 per cent on selected cases of wine. However, staying in can cost more with 90 per cent of homeowners admitting they have suffered culinary mishaps as a result of eating at home. Some of the most common accidents are china or glass breakages, food stains and red wine spills.

Simon Douglas, director of AA insurance, said: " Worryingly, less than half of home contents policyholders have an Accidental Damage extension to their contents policy and an estimated third of homes have no contents cover at all."
