Those looking to go abroad this year have been reminded by Comfused.com that they do not need to take out insurance with their travel agents and could save money by shopping around.
According to Association of British Travel Agents figures, 40 per cent of all insurance policies were sold by travel agents, but the price comparison website has said that this may not be the best deal available.
One adult between 18 and 54 looking to go on a week's trip to Europe, for example, may pay up to 85 per cent more when taking out travel insurance with travel agents Thomas Cook, compared to the best deal available on Confused.com.
Steve Williams, head of travel insurance at Confused.com, said: "Even if consumers choose to purchase their holiday through a travel agent, they should not feel obligated to take their travel insurance out with them too."
Holidaymakers choosing to drive abroad have also been advised to make sure they are covered under their car insurance by moneysupermarket.com.
