More Than is offering home insurance tips to people who want make their gardens and homes more secure against the threat of burglars .

While More Than home insurance covers up to £2,000 for plants, gardens and trees and the same amount for outdoor furniture, heaters, barbecues and ornaments, the firm is advising homeowners to take precautions such as using garden lighting .

Also, fencing and gates will act as a barrier to thieves, while a natural alternative may be thorn bushes or prickly plants. Hedges should be well-trimmed so that people cannot hide within them and garden sheds should always be locked. Further, gravel driveways can provide a noisy deterrent.

Recently, Sainsburys Home Insurance issued a similar warning and advised homeowners to insure their belongings inside the property . The firm estimated that the average cost to a family whose belongings are destroyed in a disaster such as fire would be amount to £45,000.
