Travel insurance provider AA has said that those booking holidays at the last minute are forgetting or choosing not to take out cover for their trip abroad .
New research by the company found that 50 per cent of all travel insurance packages for single trips to Europe are bought within three days of the holiday, with some purchased hours or minutes before departure times.
Some 17 per cent of visitors to Europe neglect to make any arrangements for travel insurance at all, according to Foreign and Commonwealth Office figures, and AA said that 'turn-up-and-go' holiday deals are contributing to this.
Christian Young, director of AA Travel Insurance, said: "People who leave things to the last minute are inevitably going to have less time to be well-organised and insurance tends to be back of mind until it's too late."
Those looking to save money when they go abroad this year have been reminded by Confused.com that they do not need to take out insurance with their travel agents and, instead, could shop around for the best deal.
