Pet insurer reveals missing animal trends

Fri, 22 May 2009

Recent research conducted by Sainsburys has revealed the methods that people use to find missing cats or dogs .

The most popular strategy was to undertake a personal search of the neighbourhood, an approach employed by 68 per cent of people who have lost pets in the last five years.

Almost as many (65 per cent) asked their neighbours for details and 40 per cent went to the RSPCA or local cats' and dogs homes . Informing the police, offering rewards and placing an advertisement in the local newspaper were carried out by 15 per cent, 13 per cent and eight per cent respectively.

Sainsburys Pet Insurance will give up to £1,000 towards advertising costs for lost animals and £750 compensation if the policy holder is never reunited with their pet . The company also carried out another pet insurance survey which revealed that 12 per cent of cats and dogs under the age of three suffer from medical conditions which can recur, or cause other illnesses in later life.
