In order for people travelling abroad to be covered by their travel insurance, it is essential for travel insurers to be informed of any pre-existing medical conditions .
Recent research conducted by Sainsburys Bank revealed that over the last year, around 1.3 million people travelled abroad with pre-existing medical conditions without letting their travel insurer know about them. The research also revealed that about 500,000 people with medical conditions travelled abroad without any travel insurance at all.
Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance Manager, Sam Marrs, said: "The purpose of travel insurance is to ensure that if a disaster does strike, you’ll receive the necessary care and support. Withholding key information such as any medical conditions could, however, mean your cover may be invalidated and in the worst of cases, this could mean facing large hospital bills or arranging your own repatriation ."
Mr Marrs also explained that travel insurance is very competitive, especially if a person has a common medical condition. If however it’s a more serious medical condition, there are specialist insurers available.
